HyperWhisper plays a short chime when you start a recording. It plays a different chime when you stop the recording. These sounds tell you when the app records your voice. You do not have to look at the screen.

Turn sound effects on or off

Open Settings

Click the HyperWhisper menu bar icon, then open Settings.

Go to Sound

Select the Sound section.

Toggle Sound Effects

Turn Sound Effects on or off. If you turn it off, the app plays no sounds during a recording.

The two chimes

The app plays two different chimes:
  • Start recording — The app plays a chime when you press your recording hotkey and the app starts to record.
  • Stop recording — The app plays a different chime when you release the hotkey or click stop.
The app loads the sounds at startup. As a result, each chime plays immediately, with no delay that you can hear.

Sound themes (macOS only)

The app has two sound themes:
The app stores a theme selection internally, but playback does not read it yet — every chime uses the same fixed sound file regardless of the stored theme. The Settings window also does not show a theme control. A future release will wire the theme setting up and add this control.

Sound effects volume

The volume of the sound effects is separate from the system volume. The scale is 0.0 to 1.0. On Linux, drag the slider between 0.0 and 1.0, then click Save settings. The slider is disabled while Play recording start and stop sounds is unchecked, because a volume has no effect when the sounds are off.
A future macOS release will add the slider to the Settings window. Until then, the macOS volume stays at 0.5.
